For the puja thali
- Idols or a picture of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha
- A red or yellow cloth for the chowki
- Kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut
- Roli, kumkum, haldi and rice (akshat)
- Fresh flowers and a garland
- Sweets, dry fruits and puffed rice (kheel) with batasha for prasad
- Coins or silver, as your family tradition follows
Light and fragrance
- Diyas and cotton batti. Plan for at least 11 or 21 diyas for the house and doorway. Our cow dung diyas are biodegradable, so they can go into the garden after the festival.
- Ghee or mustard oil for the diyas
- Kapoor for aarti. Bheemseni kapoor burns away fully and leaves no black mark on the thali.
- Incense sticks or dhoop. Kesar Chandan and Chandan are festive favourites.
- Samrani to fill the whole house with fragrance before guests arrive
If you do a havan
Add hawan samagri, ghee, mango wood (samidha) and a small hawan kund. Our simple havan guide walks through the steps.
A week before Diwali
- Clean the puja space and the entrance, where Lakshmi is welcomed.
- Order puja items early. Deliveries get slower close to the festival.
- Check that diyas, battis and kapoor are dry and ready.
- Plan gifts for family, neighbours and colleagues.
